Kongsberg – accommodation.
Probably the best choice is made by those staying in Kongsberg Vandrerhjem (32732024), where the prices for accommodation are low to moderate. The hostel is located approx 2 km from the train station; go down the shopping street Storgata, turn right after the bridge and cross the footbridge over the road 40. You have to pay for an overnight stay with breakfast in a common room 185 nkr, and one in the rooms- and double rooms respectively 400 i 540 nkr (additional payment for bed linen 60 nkr). You can also buy other meals.
The closest campsite is Max Kro & Camping (32764405, fax 32764472), by the roadside 37 towards Rjukan, 14 km northwest of the city. Setting up a tent for two people costs money 50 nkr without a car, 70 nkr with a car, and the price for renting modest cottages with self-maintenance for 4 i 6 people is 250 i 300 nkr. You can get there either by bus that runs once a day at weekends #412 (25 min, 22 nkr), or the more frequent Nor-Way Bussekspress from Kongsberg to Rjukan (15 min, 22 nkr). Closer to the city, you can spend the night in Statskog Sølvverket Hytter (32771400, fax 32771401), in one of fourteen modest houses with an open fireplace (250 – 400 nkr).
Of the two better hotels in Kongsberg, the Gyldenløve Hotel offers lower prices (Hermann Fossgata 1, 32731744, fax 32724780), where accommodation in singles and doubles costs 520 i 640 nkr. In the competing Quality Grand Hotel (Christian Augustsgata 2, 32732029 or 32772800, fax 32734129), near the river, prices for similar rooms (but with breakfast) are 580 – 800 nkr.
More or less 22 km north of the city, by the roadside 40, is located Lampe-land Course- & Tourist center (32752046), where accommodation in singles and doubles costs 495 i 650 nkr, and in family rooms for four people (with breakfast) – from 700 nkr. This resort is geared towards outdoor activities, and its specialty are outdoor barbecues. You can also rent canoes and bicycles.
