Trondheim – pilgrim destination

Nidaros Cathedral, is the hallmark of Trondheim, and at the same time the largest Nordic cathedral. You, from almost 1000 years, pilgrims come in search of the tomb of Saint Olaf. Contemporary travelers also hike or cycle along the ancient routes of pilgrims. Others make pilgrimages to others, more secular "holiness" – large, fish rivers located around the city.

The former capital of Norway, Trondheim, today it is the third largest city with 174 000 residents.
Trondheim or Nidaros, because that's what the city used to be called, was founded by Olaf Tryggvason in 997 year.
In 1030, Olaf the Holy died in the Battle of Stiklestad, and thus Christianity settled down in Norway for good.
First, a small one was erected, wooden chapel above Olaf's grave, and then the population built a stone church, which became the nucleus of such a cathedral, as we know it today.
Many gifts came to the church, because the fame of Olaf the saint as a saint grew rapidly. He was the greatest martyr king of the country, he was also known and worshiped far beyond its borders.

In fact, during the Middle Ages, Nidaros was the most common pilgrimage destination in northern Europe. Currently, the crown jewels are stored in Nidarosdomen, together with church treasures from the old days.

There are also many other places and attractions to visit in Trondheim, among others, the charming wooden buildings of the Bakklandet district and the unique Bryggene wharf, at the mouth of the river Nidelven. Many cultural monuments tell about the historical importance of the city, however, despite being rooted in history, Trondheim is a modern city. There are nowhere as many petroglyphs as around Trondheim.

Nidarosdomen dominates the city of Trondheim. Trondheim and the Nidarosdomen West Wall, which is the most beautiful and ornate wall of the cathedral.

The Stiklestadspelet show tells the story of Saint Olaf and the Christianization of Norway. This outdoor performance is staged in and around Verdal every year, north of Trondheim.
