Archipelag Svalbard – House of the Polar Bear

In summer, the Svalbard archipelago is bathed in sunshine, which does not occur, and in winter, the untamed aurora sheds light over the landscape. Svalbard is a very special part of Norway and one of the northernmost lands in the world. Because Svalbard is so off the beaten track, the area was subject to little human influence. Most of its area is still untouched nature, without roads or other traces of human interference.

The arctic Svalbard archipelago lies halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole. The nature of Svalbard is characterized by huge glaciers and vast mountain plateaus. Despite being raw, arctic climate, Svalbard is rich in fauna in the form of polar bears, walruses and many other species of animals and birds, that have adapted to the cold climate. Rich coal deposits gave rise to the establishment of the Longyearbyen and Barentsburg mining settlements.

Svalbard was discovered in 1596 year. First, the islands were used by whale hunters, having a fishing base there since the 18th century, which was abandoned in time. Coal mining began at the beginning of the 19th century, which led to the founding of many communities. Currently, there are approx 2600 residents, most of them in Longyearbyen.

That beautiful, the mountainous land is a paradise for geologists alike, as well as tourists. More than half the timekeeper 63 000 km2 of Svalbard's surface is covered with ice. The shoreline is marked by pointed mountains, which gave its name to the largest island of Svalbard,
