FLEKKEFJORD

The city of Flekkefjord was founded as early as in 1660 r., but because it competed with King-backed Kristiansand, two years later, city rights were taken away from him. Nevertheless, the fishery continued to develop and at the time of regaining rights in 1842 r. The Flekkefjord was an important center for herring fishing and a major tannery center. Currently, the city is counting 6000 residents.

Tourist information office (38324254, fax 38321233), Kirkegata 50, is open from 15 VI to 15 VIII in hours 10.00 – 18.00 At weekdays, do 15.00 on Saturdays and from 12.00 do 17.00 on Sunday. In other months – on weekdays from 9.00 do 15.00.

Sightseeing

Worth the climb up Lilleheia hill, to look at the city from there (access from Dr. Kraftsgat). It is also interesting to walk through the narrow streets of the Hollenderbyen district, built-up with old wooden houses. The 18th-century building houses the Flekkefjord Museum, which also includes coastal warehouses in neighboring Sjøbodene. The museum is open on weekdays from 11.00 do 17.00, on weekends from 12.00 do 15.00.

Dating from 1832 r. the octagonal church made of wooden trunks was designed by architect Hans Lindstow, who also designed the royal palace in Oslo. Worth noticing, that columns, the tower and the baptismal font are also octagonal, as does the Grand Hotel tower and numerous public buildings in the Flekkefjord area. The church can be visited during the summer months.

Accommodation and gastronomy

The closest campsite is Egenes Camping (38320148, fax 38320111, egenes@online.no), on Lake Seluravatnet, by the E39 road, 5 km east of Flekkefjordu. Setting up a tent costs money 50 nkr without a car or 90 nkr with a car, a trailer setup -100 nkr (Additionally 15 nkr per person). For cottages for 4 i 6 people have to pay 250 i 400 nkr, and for self-catering apartments – from 500 do 600 nkr. There is also a boat and canoe rental service on site, bar, cafe and restaurant. Access by bus #486 going towards Dybvik.

Bondeheimen Hotel (Elvegata 7-9, 38322144, fax 38322979) offers accommodation in modest singles and doubles for 335 i 490 nkr. There is also an à la carte restaurant and a café. In the more expensive First Hotel Maritim (38323333, fax 38324312) in summer the rooms cost money 445 i 590 nkr. Light meals are served in the bistro next to the hotel, and in a restaurant – dancing six evenings a week.

The Nor-Way Bussekspress bus from Kristiansand passes through Flekkefjord (2 at, 140 nkr) do Stavanger (2 at. 30 min, 150 nkr). The nearest train station is in Sira (on the Oslo-Stavanger railway line), where you can get by bus #461 going to Gyland (1 at, 27 nkr) and buses #480 i #480, which are going to Sira (30 min, 26 nkr).
