West coast fjords

The glacier Jostedalsbreen lies between the great Sognefjorden fjord and the more northerly Nontfjorden.. A trip to the glacier is a real treat not only for extreme travel lovers. Jostedalsbieen is the largest ice block on the European continent. Fridge, like this one, covered the ground during the Ice Age, stretching for hundreds of kilometers and they have carved the Sognefjorden area so fancifully. Jostedalsbreen ma 100 m in length and 15 km wide. It used to be connected to the second Jostefonn glacier. Today it is one of the greatest tourist attractions of this legion. The waters filling the fjord are turquoise, They delighted not only visitors, but also legendary creatures, who chose this area as their headquarters. Sailing to the other side of the fjord, we reach the route full of bends, which was called the Way of the Trolls. See the charming Stigfossen waterfall from there, also called Ladder. All the tourist attractions of this region were named after fairy-tale characters known all over the world – troili. The Trolltindan Mountains loom in the distance, legend has it, that they are where wedding trolls are held.

Torn slopes and steep cliffs protect their dwarf inhabitants and keep their secrets well guarded from the prying eyes of tourists. It is also worth visiting in summer, then on the Troili pass (Trollstigheimen) a well-known cross-country ski run takes place – Trollstigrennet.

The Sognefjorden is the most famous waterway in Norway, Connoisseurs of unusual views will also enjoy a trip to Naeroyfjorden. Its slopes are so close to each other, that tourists on a boat feel like they are in a tunnel. Even on a very sunny day, little sun gets here, there is darkness and cold radiating from the rocks. The great fjord is dotted with tiny mountain villages. Wooden huts, village churches and chapels are situated like this, that you can see them clearly. These charming places look beautiful at any time of the year, especially in spring, when the orchards bloom. These areas are decorated with waterfalls, often cascading from a height above 100 m.

Coral installments, it is not only a privilege of warm seas. Hardly anyone knows, that there are reefs all along the coast of Norway. Unfortunately, is estimated, that about 30-50 proc. corals living in Norwegian waters have been destroyed by fishermen. Bottom trawls used in fishing, drawn along the bottom, they crush the reefs. That is why environmentalists from around the world have been sounding the alarm for several years.
