Now Thjalfi is up for the competition. His opponent was Hugi and they were supposed to race. Even though Thjalfi ran the fastest among men and gods, Hugi immediately gained the upper hand. After three laps, he left Thor's servant halfway behind him.
Utgardaloki laughed aloud at the Aesir's weakness and offered Thor a drinking competition. A huge horn was brought, whose end could not be seen. The ruler assured, that those of his people, who are good at drinking, they empty it in one gulp, at worst three. Thor took one heavy drink, but there was no less drink in the corner. The second time was similar.
Finally he pulled himself together and pulled powerfully. But the surface of the fluid did not stick to the edge. The Lord of Thurs laughed again. He proposed, by Thor, you can see weaker, than they talk about him, he tried to pick up the cat from the ground, which the children of his palace easily carry. Here a steel-colored and large-sized cat jumped out. Thor, furious and humiliated, plunged at him, to pick it up. However, the cat arched so, that the god only got one paw off the ground. At this the ruler laughed even louder and said, that it does not surprise him at all, because the cat is big, and Thor is small. God angered Thursy's mockery demanded, to be given someone, with whom he could face in wrestling. Utgardaloki replied, that none of his people could wrestle with Thor, for they do not want to harm him and thus violate the sacred law of hospitality. So he summoned his old mother, Elle, saying, that she had already won more than one stronger than Thor. Thor grabbed hold of the old half, but immediately felt it, that the more he presses, the more she hugs. Finally, he could not live up to it and he fell to one knee. Here the ruler broke off their supplies and the Aesir, angry and despondent, went to sleep.
